I had just finished The Binbrook Caucus. It was late at night. The moment called for something special, but everyone was in bed except Mitch.

“What does your hero look like?” he asked.

I gave him a quick description of David Ase as a teenager. We see David at several stages of his life during the course of the novel.

“What sort of guy is he?”

I talked a bit about David's other-wordly combination of poetry and dispassion, innocence and street smarts.

With no further questions, Mitch produced this perfect sketch of David, manga-style. It's one of the coolest gifts I've ever gotten.
